And How Much Data is In Them Thar Hills?

(Rick Sander, CEO, Tuesday, February 11, 2020)

One of the sayings that is pervasive today in business is that “data is gold”. So as (a paraphrase of) an old saying goes, “How much gold (or data) is in them thar hills?” For things like retail/e-retail, the answer is obvious enough – there is a lot. All of that consumer data can be used by businesses to help target advertising, which (hopefully) leads to more consumer interest, and eventually more sales. But what about in energy management, especially in “closed” systems like fleet charging infrastructure or microgrids? Even if you have 100 vehicles that are charging on a daily basis (a lot today!), how much “gold” can you really realize from the data you capture?

As it turns out, there is a lot, and the time to realize a return on investment (ROI) from your energy usage data is pretty immediate. My last blog talked how moving electrical consumption to off-peak hours can significantly reduce your electric bill, but this usage data can also be used in a variety of other ways. If the size of your electric fleet is increasing (pretty much a given today), this data can help you forecast when your current grid power feed will not meet your needs anymore, giving your organization time to get additional power feeds (if possible), or start planning an infrastructure with energy storage and renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) solar. The data on energy usage from each vehicle can also help you schedule charging so that all vehicles are charged adequately prior to the start of each day, avoiding “vehicle brownouts” when a vehicle has to be taken out of service to recharge (impacting revenue and customer satisfaction).

As a leader in the development and manufacturing of bi-directional, high-power energy systems and EMS software, Rhombus is dedicated to helping our customer capture and make sense of their energy data. Our VectorStat® product allows customers to gather data from all of the nodes of your infrastructure, regardless of connectivity or network issues. VectorStat’s applet-based open architecture also enables the easy integration of new features and functionality, whether to support new hardware or to provide cutting-edge data analytics capabilities.
