Electric Cars and Light Trucks – The Holiday Gift for This Year?
(Rick Sander, CEO, Tuesday, December 3, 2019)
Choosing the right holiday gift for friends and relatives is always challenging. If budget is not an issue, the number of choices is quite substantial, which doesn’t necessarily make things easier. For those with very large budgets, how about an electric car or light-duty truck for your husband, wife, or driving child? As electric vehicles (EVs) become more commonplace (especially here in California), they are likely to become an increasingly popular holiday gift. There might even be Black Friday deals on EVs. However, if you do buy one as a holiday gift for someone, don’t forget to think about EV charging!
Unfortunately, the choices for home chargers are (at least for most people) limited to Level 1 (120 VAC) and Level 2 (240 FAC) chargers. Level 1 chargers take 8 hours to provide 75-80 miles of range; while Level 2 chargers can provide the same range twice as fast, an overnight wait of 8 hours for 150-160 miles of range is still quite a while. Maybe a gift card for a charging network makes more sense – most of them utilize Level 3 (also known as “fast chargers”) chargers. These chargers can provide 180 miles of range in a single hour, or over twice as fast as a Level 2 charger, and four times as fast as a Level 1 charger. There are more and more of these networks being built in the US, from auto companies to local governments to private charging network operators.
If you are banking on people giving away EVs as holiday gifts and using your network to charge them, charger reliability is critical to your bottom line. This is an area that Rhombus can help you with. As experts in high-power systems, Rhombus understands how to build high-power EV charging solutions that are both high-efficiency and highly reliable. We have built hundreds of high-power chargers for a variety of customers, with failure rates well below industry averages.
