High Power Charging Isn’t Just for Big Vehicles

(Joseph Gottlieb, CTO, Tuesday, November 19, 2019)

A few weeks (and a few blogs) ago, we talked about how fast charging is driving more and more powerful charging infrastructure for light-duty electric vehicles (EVs) – those that are in DoT Class 1/2/3/4/5, with a gross vehicle weight (GVR) of 19,500 lbs or less. The attractiveness of electric vehicles is pretty easy to understand:

  • Today, nearly 40% of air pollution is from transportation. While electric vehicles do not eliminate transportation pollution (you still have to generate the electricity), they do afford the opportunity to centralize generation into more efficient power plants, as well as enabling the use of renewable energy sources to produce that power.
  • Electric vehicles are inherently more reliable than internal combustion powered vehicles, while being quieter and significantly less expensive to operate.

On the negative side, range and charging have both been issues for electric vehicles. The range problem has been solved by battery technology – ranges in excess of 100 miles are the standard, and ranges in excess of 200 miles are fairly common.  The biggest problem has been the availability of charging infrastructure that can charge EVs in a short time – that is where level 3 “fast” chargers come into the picture. These chargers can add hundreds of miles to an EV in an hour or less (not quite as good as a gas station filling your tank, but a timeframe that would be reasonable for a lunch stop).

As more and more EVs are fielded (especially autos, which are still the bulk of vehicles on the road today), the need for fast charging infrastructure will grow even more rapidly. As experts in high-power systems, Rhombus understands how to build high-reliability, high-power EV charging solution – we have built hundreds of them for a variety of customers, with failure rates well below industry averages.
