The Impact of Air Pollution, and a Real Need for Electric Vehicles

(Rick Sander, CEO, Tuesday, March 24, 2020)

There has been a lot written recently about the connection between air pollution and the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, air pollution (of which vehicles are a significant contributor) causes many health issues beyond its acceleration of COVID-19 – it causes many thousands of deaths on its own. A 2016 study by the World Bank found that one in ten deaths in 2013 (5.5 million lives) were caused by air pollution. To underscore the widespread gravity of this problem, nearly 92% of the world’s population lives in places where air pollution exceed safe limits, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In the ten countries where air pollution deaths are the worst, the death rate ranges from 74 to 120 people per 100,000 inhabitants died from air pollution. The cost to the global economy in 2013 of the lost labor productivity alone was $225 billion (US). A more recent study by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) found that the cost of air pollution from fossil fuels was nearly $8 billion (US) per day. When the “welfare cost” (the cost of caring for these people, and the economic impact on their families) is included, this cost rises to $5 trillion dollars per year. Electric vehicles, particularly those that can replace old, heavy polluting vehicles, represent a way to reduce the impact of air pollution on human health and on the economy.

As a leader in the development and manufacturing of bi-directional, high-power energy systems and EMS software, Rhombus is dedicated to helping our electric vehicle (EV) fleet and charging network operator customers reduce the impact of air pollution on the health of the world provide, to provide reliable energy to their vehicles, and to operate them as economically as possible. Our VectorStat® product allows customers to gather data from all of the nodes of your infrastructure, regardless of connectivity or network issues.
