Using the Cloud Intelligently for Energy Management Solutions

(Joseph Gottlieb, CTO, Thursday February 27th, 2020)

Whether you are speaking about consumer or enterprise customers, “the cloud” is an integral part of our world today. Whether you are ordering groceries, holiday or birthday gifts, a vacation, the parts for your latest commercial prototype, or a company to build that prototype, it seems that you can get everything and anything from “the cloud”. So what part does the cloud play in energy management solutions (EMS), especially for electric vehicle (EV) fleet charging infrastructure, and what are the challenges in using the cloud in this environment?

Like many technology deployments today, EMS solutions can be characterized as “edge computing” solutions, where the systems lie on the “outskirts” of the cloud. Many Fleet EV charging system nodes have limited or intermittent connectivity to the cloud, often relying on cellular connections. Yet, for any EMS to provide a “compete” picture, it is critical that the data produced by each node is able to find its way to the cloud regardless of connectivity challenges. After all, that data is the “gold” for the system operators – it is what can help reduce energy bills and improve operational efficiencies. That is why we have designed VectorStat®, Rhombus’s EMS software and hardware, around a distributed time-stamped database that is contained in each node of the system. This allows the overall system to function even when the connectivity of a given node is temporarily compromised.

As a leader in the development and manufacturing of bi-directional, high-power energy systems and EMS software, Rhombus is dedicated to helping our customers minimize their energy costs, whether running a fleet charging infrastructure, an energy storage solution, or a microgrid. VectorStat is a critical part of this equation. Like all of our software, we provide a high degree of extensibility, while utilizing security “best practices”. VectorStat utilizes an applet-based open architecture with robust and clearly-defined data structures and APIs that enables the simple integration of new features and functionality, whether to support new hardware or to provide cutting-edge data analytics capabilities.
